Our illiterate family members mumble French here and there and are able to get around with it pretty well. We are all Burkinabe and by virtue of our colonial past, the lingua franca, unfortunately, is French, which paradoxically, serves as a unifying force of the myriad of ethnic communities our country embodies. For this reason therefore, we all write in French whether in good or bad French. The bottom line is, regardless of how it is written, everybody understands and does so perfectly, by the way.
